HOW TO HELP KIDS CALM DOWN (AFTER A MELTDOWN)

January 4th, 2018 | 2 comments

Each and every one of us, including our children, have the ability to feel calmer, and more alert at any given moment. This ability is called “Conscious Breathing.”

One of my prominent life missions is to empower future generations with the tools of deep breathing so they can learn to manage their feelings by slowing down their breathe.

When we teach this to our children, we give them a lifelong tool for managing their stress and cultivating inner peace in this highly anxious and competitive world.

We must first be the model by connecting to our own breathe and openly expressing our feelings if you want to encourage children to explore it for themselves. This allows them to cultivate their own inner wisdom.

Today’s VLOG shares 4 techniques I use in my children’s yoga class, to teach kids mindful breathing.

Want to practice with your kids and have the tools easily available at any time? Download this handy little cheat sheet I made for you.

breathing techniques for kids

1. BREATHING THE RIGHT WAY|| BALLOON BREATHING

•Inhale tummy expands, Exhale belly button goes back towards the spine.

2. FLOWER(LOTUS) BREATHE

•Deep breath in through nose and large exhale out of the mouth as if you are smelling a flower. This helps connect to feelings.

3. HISSING BREATHE

•Breathe in the nose, long deep inhale, and out the mouth in a hissing sound, slow and long. Slows down mental and physical activity the longer the exhale is held out.

4. BEAR BREATHE

•Inhale through the nose for a count of three, pause for a count of two, breathe out through nose for a count of 3 and pause. Wonderful for a restful and reflective time.

5. BUNNY BREATHE

•3 quick sniffs in the nose and one long exhale out the nose. This is a cleansing breath and uses when kids are upset and can’t find their breath.

NOW I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU…
