Research shows that mothers of young children spend the most time with smartphones.
Like it or not, this new generation of children are being exposed to screen time before they turn one.
You can take my 20-month old for example. He knows how to work my phone and iPad better than I do. He can go into his Go Noodle account to watch brain break mindfulness videos. Then he goes to Youtube to watch Peppa Pig and finish off with his Belly Breathing Sesame Street song.
Studies show, mothers with young kids (ages 5 and under) were the most active users of digital devices, devoting almost 37 hours a month to apps and web browsing on their phones—more than mothers of older children.
So if we are spending countless hours on our phone and your children are becoming well-versed in how to use digital gadgets, why not load them up with mindfulness and meditation tools that are beneficial for our mind, body, and spirit?
This week I want to share five of my FAVORITE meditation apps for moms and kids. Being a mindful parent means making sure screentime incorporates mindfulness breaks.
Check out my handy dandy list.
1. insight timer (mamas) meditation app
Insight Timer is my new FAV meditation app of all time for a few reasons.
For one, meditation can get lonely. And it’s not just cause it’s a solo activity.
If you’re like me, there are more people in my life who don’t meditate than do. So that means limited people to share this incredible experience with. I love seeing how many people were meditating at the same time on the app. It feels empowering knowing their are thousands of other people, around the world, feeling peaceful too.
The other great feature I love about Insight timer serves as my meditation timer when I do Kundalini meditations on my own. I have a soothing bell for reminders and it logs all my meditations so I can keep a running log of how many consecutive days I’ve been meditating. (That makes the analytical side of me quite happy to see black and white results of my commitment.)
2. welzen (mamas + KiDS) meditation app
The next app I recommend for mamas is Welzen. One of the best features they have is the Office Hours section where you can incorporate mindfulness into your workday. So many of my mindful working mamas say “It’s so hard for them to incorporate mindful moments when they are working outside the house.” Well, now there is no more excuses!
The office hours section breaks down mindful moments from the start of your day to breaks and how to disconnect from work. Pick a time that works for you and grab a mindful moment as you work.
Welzen has sections for better sleep, focus, emotion based meditations and they even have a kids section too.
Probably my favorite function is the Mind Resets. You know I’m all about incorporating Resets throughout my day. Sometimes I want a 5 minute Reset and this is my new go-to tool when I have a few extra minutes to Reset.
3. smiling mind (ages 7+ & Adults) meditation app
The Smiling Mind app is particularly for kids ages 7+ and classrooms. I love how they have different programs designed so your child can run through the different modules on their own pace. For a child who already has a foundation of meditation and shows interest in practicing, this is a great guide they can navigate themselves. From learning empathy and compassion to mindful listening to scanning emotions. This is a wonderful tool for mindful children.
4. breathe, think, do with sesame (ages 2-6) meditation app
This is the perfect primer to raise mindful kiddos. If your kids are like my son Ayaan and they like Sesame Street check out the Breathe, Think and Do app. This app helps children understand emotions and practice breathing. This is great to explore what it means to take deep breaths, when to do it, and why it can help you out.

Can’t wait to try these with myself & my toddler! He loves Daniel Tiger songs (and sings them to me when I get frustrated) so this will be a welcome addition. Thanks Tejal!
Ohh that’s amazing Pamela! Thanks for the Daniel Tiger suggestion! I’ll check it out! Does your son have any favorites? How old is he? xoxo
